Seit wann gibt es den nicht mehr?" - Diese Frage hat man sich in Deutschland oder in anderen Industrieländern vielleicht vor 20 Jahren noch gestellt, doch heute ist es eine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass es die kleinen, voll gestopften manchmal sogar unordentlichen jedoch gleichzeitig gemütlichen und liebevoll geführten Krämerläden mit einigen wenigen Ausnahmen nicht mehr gibt. Ersetzt wurden sie durch neue Betriebsformen wie z.B. Supermärkte, Lebensmittelselbstbedienungsmärkte und -warenhäuser oder Verbrauchermärkte. Auch in der Türkei ist eine ähnliche Entwicklung in der Einzelhandelslandschaft -jedoch mit einer gewissen zeitlichen Verzögerung im Vergleich zu führenden Industrienationen- zu verzeichnen. Die Anzahl der Krämerläden, die in der Türkei unter dem Namen "bakkal" bekannt sind, verringert sich von Jahr zu Jahr und überlassen ihren Platz den neuen großflächigen Betriebsformen, die sich mit einer Schwindel erregenden Schnelligkeit ausbreiten. Diese vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Entwicklung des Einzelhandels und die Bakkal-Supermarkt-Problematik in der Türkei aus verschiedenen Perspektiven wie der ökonomischen, geographischen, soziologischen und geschichtlichen Perspektive heraus. Doch im Bezug auf die Bezeichnung "bakkal" wurden auch sprachwissenschaftlich-etymologische und kulturwissenschaftliche Komponenten zusätzlich mit einbezogen. Stichprobenartige Interviews mit Krämern wurden in verschiedenen Stadtteilen in Istanbul durchgeführt und im letzten Kapitel werden einige Maßnahmen zum Erhalt des "bakkals" vorgestellt, die teilweise durch den großflächigen Einzelhandel initiiert wurden. Auch von staatlicher Seite scheint die Brisanz der Thematik erkannt worden zu sein: Gesetzesentwürfe zum Schutze des kleinflächigen Einzelhandels sind vorgelegt worden, jedoch bis heute nicht verabschiedet. Obwohl eine Prognose für die Zukunft des Einzelhandels schwer zu erstellen ist, können dennoch einige Trends festgestellt werden. In jedem Fall wird die Verfolgung der Entwicklungen in der Türkei wegen der quantitativen Dimension und der Geschwindigkeit der Transformationsprozesse weiterhin ein sehr interessantes und aktuelles Thema bleiben - nicht nur aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht! ; What actually happened to the grocery just round the corner? Since when has it been shut down? - People in Germany or in other industrial countries may have asked such a question perhaps twenty years ago. But today it's only natural that the small, crammed, sometimes even messy, but at the same time cosy corner shop, which has been run by loving care, does not exist any longer - a few cases excepted. It has been replaced by other forms of the retailing business like supermarkets, self-service stores for food, department stores, and large consumer markets. One may as well notice a similar development in Turkey in the retailing business, but the trend has been delayed in comparison to the leading industrial nations. The number of small shops which are called "bakkal" in Turkey is decreasing year by year, and they have been replaced by large-area retailing enterprises which have proliferated with staggering rapidity. This paper deals with the development of the retail trade in Turkey and the problems of the "bakkal"- supermarket from a couple of different angles like its economical, geographical, sociological, and historical perspectives. Additionally, linguistic-etymological and cultural constituents have as well been included in my research on the "bakkal". Shopkeepers in several districts of Istanbul have been interviewed in a random sample. In the last chapter of the the paper some measures aiming at the protection of the "bakkals" are presented, which had partially been initiated by the retail traders themselves. The government, too, has apparently noticed the explosiveness of the topic: bills for the protection of small scale retailers have been introduced but have not yet been passed so far. Even though it's very difficult to make a forecast for the future of the retail trade one can nevertheless notice some trends. Because of the quantitative dimension and the swiftness of the transformation process the developments in Turkey will, at any rate, remain a very interesting topic of immediate interest for the future - not only from an economical point of view!
